Biography
Maria is an enterprising ship captain hailing from Segovignia, a realm characterized by its inhabitants’ pursuit of ever more glory, gold, and guns, roughly in that order. In this regard, she is as true a Segovignian as they come. Any time she introduces herself, she makes sure everyone addresses her by her full name and list of magnificent titles—some redundant, others imaginary, all of vital importance to her sense of honor. For those instances when prestige fails to impress, gold is as solid a fallback as guns, both of which she keeps in ample supply.
At sea she keeps strict yet begrudging discipline over her crew. Although it is never clear whether they obey her out of loyalty or fear, the fact remains that she is deadly efficient. Her many successful voyages both as a ship captain and as a pirate have garnered her quite the reputation, as has another aspect of her personality—she does not abide indignities, no matter how slight, at times resorting to violence to settle the score. Here too, Maria is no slouch. With hands as quick as her wit, she is frighteningly effective with a stern word, a cutlass, or a gun.
