At first glance, Mezzanine is a gigantic humanoid shark monster in a maid’s outfit. That’s also what she is at a second glance. With her broad frame and towering build, she stands head and shoulders above everyone else. As if this were not imposing enough, she possesses the fins and fangs of her aquatic cousins. Yet Mezzanine is as demure as a timid schoolgirl. She is meek, humble, and bashful—always referring to herself in the third person and wanting nothing more than just to be useful.

Mezzanine has little sense of identity outside of her work. Indeed, her work is her identity—she is a housemaid not by profession but by nature—which raises questions on whether she is actually a person as opposed to a cleverly trained beast. She did not so much as have a name when first encountered; Marco named her after his aunt upon being introduced. Mezzanine accepted the name happily enough, though she might well have reacted similarly if any other name were offered.

She enjoys doing household chores, finding fulfillment in whatever small tasks occupy her time. In keeping with her lot in life, she always refers to herself in the third person, preferring such phrases as: “One desires this,” or “One thinks so.” Sometimes, though, she proves more useful at other tasks than when folding clothes or dusting furniture. Well-mannered as she is, she is still a four hundred pound shark monster, and that comes with peculiar advantages.

These qualities endear her to many, but also grate on the nerves of others. Some wonder if she can be trusted—is her apparent harmlessness merely a ruse for hidden animalistic tendencies, or might she have subtle ulterior motives? Only time will tell.
